Hachiko was a dog belonging to the Akita breed, living in Tokyo with a professor. He is renowned world over for showing unconditional loyalty to his owner by waiting for him at the station to come back even after his death.

One of the professor's students who developed expertise on the Akita breed saw the dog at the station and followed him to the home of the professor's former gardener where he learned the history of Hachiko's life. Shortly after the meeting, the former student published a documented census of Akitas in Japan. His research found only 30 purebred Akitas remaining, including Hachiko from Shibuya Station.

This story spread like a wildfire across Japan and Hachiko became a symbol of the Japanese spirit and his breed, Akita became heir of the love and empathy developed towards Hachiko.

People started making an effort to breed Akitas, and that's how Hachiko brought his breed back from the jaws of extinction.
