The Great Firewall of China: How does China Control the Internet?

Have you ever wondered why we never see any Chinese influencers on Social Media platforms like YouTube, Instagram, etc?
 The short answer to this is question is that these platforms have been banned in China.
But to understand how they do it, we have to look at the Great wall of China. No not the famous one that we know of, I'm talking about "The Great Firewall of China."
It is a mechanism used by the Chinese govt. to prevent its citizens from gaining access to foreign websites.

They do it using 3 methods;

1) IP blocking

By blocking specific IP addresses, the access to servers located outside China is blocked so that no data comes into the country from outside.

2) DNS Poisoning

In this method specific keywords such as Google, Facebook, Tiananmen square, etc. are blocked.

3) Manual Censorship

This is achieved by manual surveillance over a day to day activities of the netizens in China.

Now you would wonder if services like Google, Facebook, and Twitter are banned in China, then how does social media in China work?

 YouKu for YouTube
Renner for Facebook
Baidu for Google
Weibo for Twitter
WeChat for WhatsApp

These methods provide the Chinese Government, a monopoly over the internet in the nation while also allowing them to control the public opinion and curb any attempts towards a rebellion.

The firewall is only getting better with every passing day, but it is still possible to climb over this wall using a VPN, but that is a topic for another day.
