Meri Pyaari Bindu

Starring: Ayushman Khurana, Parineeti Chopra
Genre: Romance/Drama
Year of release: 2017
Language: Hindi

This is a story within a story, or rather two stories that look seemingly identical to each other, but they are not.

The love affair of this film with Old classic Bollywood songs can be traced from its name itself, "Meri Pyaari Bindu" which is a classic from the 1968 comedy "Padosan".

The story begins with Abhimanyu (Ayushman Khurana), a Kolkata boy with an unhappening childhood. That is until Bindu (Parineeti Chopra)  becomes his neighbor, as after that his life never ran out of thrill, so much so that it would even put the fluid in an alcoholic's belly to shame.

Abhimanyu and Bindu become really close friends, they live every moment of their lives together having fun along the way. Bindu was really close to her mother, while her father was a retired army officer who drank really heavy. One day, Bindu's mother dies in a road accident and that changes everything. Bindu blames her father as he drove the car while he was drunk. As a result of that, she leaves home and goes to Australia. Even Abhi leaves Kolkata for Mumbai, in search of a job that he finds soon at a bank. They both keep in touch through letters for some time, but eventually, they become busy in their own lives and lose contact.

But their paths were meant to cross again, and this time it was in Goa, while on a vacation. So here comes the next chapter of their story. On their return to Mumbai, they grow close to each other and this time it is more than just friends. Finally, it happens. Keeping in line with his inherent clumsiness, Abhi comes up with a subtle proposal to Bindu through a newspaper crossword, but it works. Bindu agrees, she does. And then they live happily ever after, but not quite.

What comes after the after is not as happy as the moment of the happy ending. Bindu always wanted to become a star singer and she begins to feel caged with Abhimanyu, she does not feel happy and she decides to leave for Bangalore. Abhimanyu is gutted, he stops answering Bindu's letters and emails. He becomes an author, writing cringy adult horror stories, which would make you cringe to the core but they did sell. Abhimanyu was successful, but he wasn't quite happy. He wanted to write a love story, his story. He starts writing it, the title reads,
"Meri Pyaari Bindu"
And 3 years on, he's still not able to finish it, mainly because the story was real, it was his own story which was indeed incomplete. So I would leave this review incomplete too, as what happens after this deserves to be felt through Abhi's heart rather than reading it through my eyes.

CONCLUSION

Plus point

  • The authentic set-up
  • Relatable characters
  • Realism
  • Melodious, catchy music

Negatives

  • The only mild negative I can think of is that the movie does not carry a substantial plot, but that has been beautifully compensated by the depth in which the characters are described.
